A team of ethical hackers spends a week probing your systems, delivers a PDF report, and you spend the next quarter remediating findings. The problem? Your attack surface changes daily, and threat actors don't wait for your annual assessment cycle.
The coverage gap
A typical enterprise deploys code changes 200+ times per month. Each deployment can introduce new endpoints, modify authentication flows, or add dependencies with known CVEs. A point-in-time pen test captures a snapshot — it cannot account for the 364 days between assessments where your application is evolving continuously.

Integrating scanning into the CI/CD pipeline
The most effective deployment model runs scans as a gate in your CI/CD pipeline. Dependency checks run on every pull request. Container image scans run before deployment. Infrastructure scans run on every Terraform apply. This shifts security left without slowing down delivery — critical vulnerabilities block deployment, medium findings create tickets, low findings log for review.
Implementation checklist
Start with dependency scanning (lowest friction, highest signal). Add container scanning in week two. Introduce DAST against staging environments in month two. Layer in infrastructure scanning once the team is comfortable with the workflow. Don't try to boil the ocean on day one.
Pen testing still has a role
Automated scanning and manual pen testing are complementary, not competing. Scanners excel at breadth — checking every dependency, every endpoint, every configuration. Pen testers excel at depth — chaining vulnerabilities, testing business logic flaws, and simulating real attacker behaviour. The optimal programme uses continuous automated scanning as the baseline and targeted pen tests for high-risk areas.
